How-To Guides

Connecting a Screen

Before a screen can display your content, you need to pair it with the dashboard. This is a one-time setup per screen.

Before you start

Make sure:

  • The screen is turned on.
  • The player app is installed and running on the screen (see Installing the Player).
  • The screen is connected to the internet.

Supported players: Samsung, LG, and the Web Player.

How to pair a screen

On the screen

When the player app starts for the first time, it shows a pairing code — six characters, displayed in the centre of the screen. The code expires after 15 minutes; if it lapses, restart the player to get a fresh one.

In the dashboard

  1. Click Devices in the left menu.
  2. Click Connect Device (top right).
  3. Fill in the device details:
    • Device Name — a recognisable name (e.g. "Reception Screen", "Floor 2 Left")
    • Client, Channel, POS Location — where the screen lives in your structure
    • Department — optional, for organising screens by area or team
    • Template — see below
  4. Enter the pairing code shown on the screen.
  5. Click Save Device.

The screen appears in your Devices list with a green online badge.

Choosing a template

Every screen either uses a template or plays media only. There is nothing in between — a screen does not inherit a template from its store or its client.

  • No template — media only. The screen plays the content and schedules you assign it, full-frame. It runs no queue board and no news ticker, and it never contacts those services at all. This is the default.
  • A template. The screen renders that layout: a media region plus whichever widgets the template defines, such as a queue board or a news ticker.

Pick Device Template to open the picker. You can change this later from the device's Details tab, in either direction — a media-only screen can gain a template, and a template screen can drop back to media only.

What a template contains is decided in the template itself, not per screen. If you change a template's regions, every screen using it changes too.

Setting up template widgets

If the template you chose includes widgets, open the device and go to the Setup tab.

  • News ticker — choose which ANSA regional feed this screen reads. A screen never asks for its own region: the server reads this setting, so the player cannot steer what gets fetched.
  • Queue board — the screen discovers the totem on its local network during a setup window that you open from this tab. Queue settings such as the totem address are shared across the point of sale, so they affect every screen there.

A media-only screen has no Setup work to do.

Checking if a screen is online

The Devices page shows a badge for each screen:

  • 🟢 online — the screen checked in recently
  • 🔴 offline — the screen has not checked in recently

A screen goes offline if it loses its internet connection or the player app is closed. You can filter the list by Online, Offline, or Revoked.

Note that the Devices page does not refresh on its own. Reload the page, or move away and back, to pull fresh status.

Viewing what a screen is playing

Click any device in the list to open its detail page. You will see:

  • Now Playing — the content, playlist, or schedule the screen last reported. If a screen has nothing assigned it reads Nothing playing.
  • Last Sync — when the screen last checked in.
  • Template view — a preview of the layout this screen renders.

The preview shows how the screen is configured, not a photograph of the glass. It is built from the same template and settings the player receives, so it will match what is on screen, but it is not a live screenshot.

Renaming or reorganising a screen

  1. Click the screen in the Devices list.
  2. On the Details tab, update the name, client, channel, POS location, department, tags, or template.
  3. Click Save Device.

Tags are for finding and grouping screens in the dashboard. They do not target content — content and schedules are always sent to screens you pick individually.

Revoking versus removing a screen

These are two different actions, and only one of them is about the hardware.

  • Revoke Device invalidates the screen's active player sessions. The screen stops syncing and returns to its pairing screen. The device stays in your dashboard, and you can pair it again with a new code. Use this when a screen is lost, stolen, or being handed to someone else.
  • Remove Device takes the screen out of the CMS entirely. It no longer appears anywhere, though its pairing history is kept.

Both are available from the three-dot menu (⋯) on the device, and both can be applied to several selected screens at once.

Neither action is the way to stop playback. To stop a screen showing something, change or clear its assignment instead — see Assigning Content to a Screen.
